Using Claude to Write Product Descriptions at Scale

The Real Bottleneck Isn't Writing, It's Consistency

Writing one great product description is easy. Writing 200 of them that all sound like the same brand, without repeating the same three adjectives, is where most stores give up and settle for "premium quality, built to last."

3. Generate a batch of 15-25 SKUs
4. Human review

Step 1: Export Clean Product Data First

Garbage in, garbage out applies harder to AI than almost anything else. Before writing a single prompt, export:

• Product title, category, and key specs (material, size, dimensions).
• Anything that differentiates it from similar SKUs (this is what stops descriptions from sounding identical).
• Any compliance-required language (care instructions, safety warnings) that must appear verbatim.

Step 2: Write a Style Guide Once, Reuse It Forever

This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. A short, specific style guide beats a long, vague one:

Brand voice: direct, a little dry, no exclamation points.
Sentence length: short. Avoid "elevate," "unleash," "premium," "game-changing."
Structure: 1 hook sentence, 2-3 sentences on material/fit/use case, 1 short line on care.
Always mention: [material], [where it's made, if relevant].
Never mention: competitors, price, "limited time."

Save this and paste it into every batch, this is what prevents the generic "AI voice" that customers can spot instantly.

Step 3: Generate in Small, Reviewable Batches

Don't ask for 200 at once. Batches of 15-25 keep quality high and make review manageable:

Using the style guide above, write descriptions for these 20 products: [paste data].
Flag any product where you don't have enough information to write confidently,
don't guess at specs.

That last line matters, it's the difference between Claude saying "I need more detail on this one" versus inventing a fabric composition that isn't accurate.

Step 4: Human Review Is Not Optional

Specifically check for:

• Factual accuracy — materials, sizing, care instructions.
• Compliance language — anything legally required must be verified, not trusted to AI.
• Repetition across the batch — if every product uses "effortlessly," fix the style guide, not just that one description.

Step 5: Publish in Bulk

Once reviewed, bring descriptions back into Shopify via CSV import (Products → Import), or directly through an MCP connection if you've set one up.

The Honest Trade-off

This isn't "set and forget." It's turning a 40-hour writing task into a 6-hour writing-and-editing task. For a 300-SKU catalog, that's still a massive win, just don't expect zero human involvement.
