How to Connect Claude to Your Shopify Store (MCP Setup Guide)
Before You Start
This assumes you understand what an MCP server does (see our previous post if not). This guide covers the general setup flow, exact menu names can shift as Claude and Shopify both ship updates, so treat this as the shape of the process rather than a pixel-perfect walkthrough.
- Pick an app or custom tool
- Connect it to Claude
- Review requested scopes
- Run a test prompt
- Fix permissions if it fails
- Build real workflows
Step 1: Choose Your Connection Method
You have two realistic paths:
- An existing Shopify MCP server or connector, if one is available in Claude's connector directory, this is the fastest route.
- A custom Shopify App, built by a developer, exposing only the specific tools you want (e.g. inventory read access, order lookups). This is the safer route for stores handling sensitive customer data.
Step 2: Add the Connector in Claude
In Claude's settings, look for Connectors (sometimes called Integrations). Adding one typically asks you to authenticate, this is where you log into your Shopify admin and approve the connection, exactly like installing any third-party app.
Step 3: Review the Requested Scopes Carefully
Before approving, check what access is being requested:
- Read products / inventory — safe for most reporting and content use cases.
- Read orders — needed for support and analysis workflows, contains customer data.
- Write access (edit products, issue refunds) — only grant this if you have a specific, reviewed workflow that needs it.
Step 4: Test With a Low-Stakes Request
Don't jump straight into something business-critical. Try:
Can you list my 5 most recent orders and their status?
or
Which 10 products currently have the lowest inventory count?
If the answer matches what you see in your Shopify admin, the connection is working correctly.
Step 5: Build a Real Workflow
Once verified, this is where it gets useful. A few starting points:
- A weekly low-stock check, ask Claude to flag anything under a threshold.
- A daily "what changed" summary of new orders and any flagged support tickets.
- A product content pass, pull a batch of products missing descriptions and draft copy for them.
A Word on Permissions
Treat an MCP connection the same way you'd treat handing a staff member the keys to your admin. Grant only what the workflow needs, review connected apps quarterly, and revoke access immediately if a workflow is retired.
If you're not confident setting this up internally, this is exactly the kind of technical integration our team handles, feel free to book a call if you'd rather have it done right the first time.
