Prompting Claude for E-commerce Tasks: A Practical Playbook

Good Prompts Aren't Clever, They're Complete

The difference between a mediocre AI output and a genuinely useful one is rarely the AI, it's almost always missing context in the prompt. Here's a reusable structure, plus five prompts you can copy today.

  1. Write the prompt
  2. Define the AI role
  3. Provide store context
  4. State the exact task
  5. Define the output
  6. Set format or add a verification step
  7. Execute the prompt
  8. High-quality output

The 5-Part Structure

  1. Role — who should Claude act as? ("You're a Shopify merchandiser," not just "help me with products.")
  2. Context — the store data, brand voice, or constraints it needs to know.
  3. Task — the exact outcome, not the general topic.
  4. Format — how you want the output structured.
  5. Check — tell it how you'll verify the answer, this alone reduces confident-sounding mistakes.

Prompt 1: Merchandising Analysis

You're analyzing product performance for a Shopify store. Here's last month's
sales-by-product data: [paste export].
Identify: (1) top 3 products by margin, not just revenue, (2) any product with
high traffic but low conversion, (3) one clear recommendation for each.
Flag if the data is too limited to draw a confident conclusion.

Prompt 2: Support Reply Draft

Draft a reply to this customer message: [paste].
Their order info: [paste or pull via connector]. Our policy on this: [paste relevant
section only]. Tone: warm, concise, no corporate filler.
If any detail is uncertain, say so rather than guessing.

Prompt 3: Product Copy Batch

Style guide: [paste your saved style guide].
Write descriptions for these products: [paste data].
Flag any product you don't have enough detail to write confidently about.

Prompt 4: Weekly Report

Using this week's order and inventory data [via connector or pasted export],
write a founder-facing summary. Lead with the single biggest change. 3 bullets max.
Skip anything roughly unchanged from last week. Under 200 words.

Prompt 5: Code / Theme Fix

Here's a Liquid snippet that's [describe the bug]: [paste code].
Explain what's causing it in one sentence, then show the corrected code.
Don't rewrite anything outside what's needed to fix this specific issue.

The One Habit That Improves Every Prompt

Add a line that gives Claude permission to say "I don't have enough information." Without it, AI tools tend to fill gaps with a plausible-sounding guess. With it, you get an honest flag instead, which is far more useful for anything touching real customer data or money.
